Archimedes screw is named after Greek philosopher and mathematician Archimedes who first described it around 234 BC. Though there is evidence that it had been used in Ancient Egypt a long time before that. It is thought that Archimedes used it to remove water from the hold of a large ship that was very leaky.

We decided, as we are Team Shark, as a bit of fun, to make the motor housing look like a shark so we first spray painted the casing white and then shaded a blue grey colour over the top. As I said, this is just a bit of fun and it passed the time while we were waiting to get things done in the workshop. Two 'legs' come down from the back end of the square frame and this had two sets of hooks on it in which another dowel with another bracket sits in and this can alter the angle further. Also at this stage when we tried fitting the screw in the downpipe it was too tight a fit so we had to grind down some of the blades using an angle grinder. The welding caused the central pole to warp slightly so we had to manually bend the pole back so that it was as straight as possible. We made supports for the screw to sit in so that it was held at one level and span it using a drill to see where the warping was, we then had to bend it by hand.

We now have 2 different “Off grid” or stand-alone systems for remote areas. The screw needs 1 meter of head as a minimum, and can go up to 10 meters in some cases, but the screw is most likely to be used on heads of less than 5 meters. All the work on the addition was done on dry ground, and when completed the earth between the screw exit and the watercourse was removed. This means that small dams/weirs are now useful valuable assets once again as they were historically and now a valuable assets as we clean up our air, renew our economy and reduce our reliance on foreign oil. Small dams can be functioning, economically viable hydropower dams. The power that we can be derived from a hydro site is a function of the head, or height, of the vertical drop and the volume of water in the river. The bigger the head and the bigger the volume of water the more power can be generated.

This would no longer be true run of river, but may be desirable in some situations such as a planned draw down of water levels to allow for flood flows. This is measured as the distance between where the water leaves a river to enter a hydro system and where the water goes back into the river. Clearly by taking a given volume of water out of a river, there will be an impact upon the natural ecology of the river bed. A large depleted distance may therefore compromise the ecology of the river bed. The smaller the depleted distance, the less impact there will be upon the fish and wildlife ecology. The Archimedean Screw has the lowest depleted reach because it is placed alongside a river weir – the water enters the system from just above the weir and returns to the river just below the weir.

Cost efficiency –

The Archimedes screw pump works by turning a screw-shaped surface inside a circular pipe. As the screw turns the material is forced up the pipe in a process called displacement. Firstly we vaccuum formed over a hemisphere to create a bowl type shape. Then we drilled and filed out a hole that fit tightly over the end of the pipe. Finally we heated up the plastic again using a heat gun and bent it into the shape of a spout. So we decided to create a funnel to channel the water into the exit bucket.

The Archimedean Screw and the Waterwheel operate at normal atmospheric pressure while other turbines, for instance the Kaplan, operate by forcing water at high pressure into the system. In addition, the screw turns at a low velocity of approx 28 rpm. This, together with the operation of the turbine under normal atmospheric pressure, enables the safe passage of fish through the system. On the middle yellow bar on either side, thread 5 gray spacers, and then thread the holes on the four red corner pieces on the four top yellow bars as shown. Now, place a gray spacer and 2 blue spacers onto the middle bar on either side of the gearbox. Make a box, with 4 red corner connectors connected on the vertical sides by black/green pegs, and horizontally by two orange pass-through connectors with blue bars coming out both sides.

The edges of the discs are then ground to the right size using a bench grinder . The surface of the discs are also ground down using an angle grinder to remove any burr from the surface and improve the aesthetic. For the pitch we created a template using a CNC machine.

If at any time the screws flow capacity exceeds the watercourse flow, this is when the sluice gate can become active to restrict flow to the screw to maintain the target water level at the weir. We prefer to bypass these extra costs because micro hydro does not have the scale to withstand these types of costs. Take one of the red bars and place one of the black end caps on the end of it. Next, snap a pink A-shaped pin connector to it, followed by the 100-Tooth Gear. (Be sure that the pin on the pink connector is inserted into the hole on the gear, otherwise the gear will not be driven by the input shaft.) On top of the gear, place a white circular connector as shown. This project makes use of K'nex parts and 3D printed components to make an Archimedes Screw that can achieve high rates of speed thanks to gear ratios, a form of lever.

Build an Archimedes Screw

The scattered records paint the thinker as an enigmatic genius, famous for his Eureka moment or for the legendary siege machines with which he helped to defend his home city of Syracuse. However, his greatest invention is perhaps one of the most understated, a device that does not carry the notoriety of running down the street naked or destroying Roman galleys in a burst of flame. Doesn’t require fine intake screening for debris as it passes all but the largest of debris, making it less maintenance with little to no trash rack cleaning. There is a course intake grate to keep out the very large debris and for safety purposes. Mix a few drops of food coloring with one cup of water in one of the bowls. Place it where it will catch the water which comes out the top of the tube. Using the duct tape, tape one end of the narrow tubing onto one end of the plastic bottle, leaving about 1 cm hanging out over the end.

It consists of a cylindrical shaft around which, a helical surface is wound. When the setup is kept inclined over a water surface, and the shaft turned, then the liquid rises through its turns and reaches the top of the tube. Rotate the screw so the bottom end of the tubing "scoops" water with each rotation.

If you can get a good seal between the screw and the sleeve, you can get water moving, however this can be a bit tempermental depending on how aggressive you are with sandpaper, should it be needed. Archimedes screw systems do not obstruct the movement of sediment, woody debris or nutrients. This is also facilitated by the fact an Archimedes screw systems only has a very course intake grate with openings of 6″ by 6″. The trials looked at fish passage across a broad spectrum of sizes and turbine speeds, possibly the most impressive of which was the safe passage of a kelt measuring 98cm in length and weighing 7.6kg. Does not have to affect the water levels above or below the water control structure – we say it doesn’t “have to”, but we can if this is desired for some environmental reason.
