Dallas' Mr Brunch Finds a New Favorite Hudson House is a Haven for Oysters and More

On a weekday evening at Hudson House Addison, the covered outdoor patio was comfortable and safely spaced out. All servers and management wore their masks and it truly felt like a mini vacation once the first cocktail came out — a frozen peach Bellini always doles out those beach vibes.

Dallas’ Mr. Brunch Finds a New Favorite — Hudson House is a Haven for Oysters and More

It’s the third location for Hudson House, joining the original restaurant in Highland Park and an Addison outpost that opened in 2018. The newest Hudson House will occupy a 4,500 square foot space that formerly housed an IHOP, complete with a private dining space called the Pineapple Room. I recently went to the Addison Hudson House for a late Sunday brunch. We had a reservation and it was crowded, but it looked like those without a reservation were not having to wait more than 10 to 15 minutes for a table. This Hudson House has a charming outdoor patio, but alas the weather wasn’t on our side that day for dining al fresco. I’ll be sure to pop in frequently now since this location is just a few blocks from my home.

A Cruise Through Hudson House’s Menu

I opted for the “World’s Coldest Martinis” for my second drink. The Stone Fruit with peach vodka, Patrón Citrónage, white cranberry, and fresh lime was the perfect choice. Paired with seafood tower, The Bouquet, we couldn’t have had a better start to our meal. As impressive as it was educational, the tower came with twelve oysters and an informational card explaining their origins and flavor profiles.

I went with my standard Brooks Brothers white button-up, an Anderson & Cooper navy striped cotton sweater tied around my shoulders, shorts, and Stan Smith Adidas. As vice president of culinary for Vandelay Hospitality, Douglas is elevating old dishes like the chicken Parmesan by recreating the sauce and upgrading the pasta with a selection from Eataly. He is also introducing new items like grilled oysters to keep the menu fresh and exciting. Be on the lookout for a molten lava cake that may make its way into the Hudson House dessert rotation.

(The smaller, Raspberry oysters ended up being my favorite.) The Bouquet also comes with snow crab claws, tuna tartare, shrimp cocktail, and grilled pineapple to mix it up. After nearly a year of anticipation, the opening date for the third location of beloved East Coast-inspired restaurant, Hudson House Lakewood, is finally upon us. We arrived to find a dining room and bar that was buzzing (it was a Tuesday at 5pm), but with every other banquette purposefully empty. The decor is similar to the Addison and University Park locations, with hints of New England vacation spots such as Nantucket and East Hampton. Many of the patrons seemed straight out of a Vineyard Vines ad with their pastel polos, sundresses, and Jack Rogers sandals.

Collins says restaurant staff seat guests in every other booth and do not allow people to wait in the lobby for a table. After experiencing almost half of the menu in one sitting, I get the hype. Keep an eye out for Hudson House’s Greek key and pineapple motifs hidden in antique materials soured from around the world. Another starter we tried was Hudson’s Avocado Dip with whipped avocado and ranch chips.

We went on to sample many other items that our charming and knowledgeable server recommended. Those included the scallops, steak frites and ahi tuna. All good, but I must point out another item that I will likely return to have again and again — the lemon pancakes. As I am not a true oyster aficionado I appreciated that each had a description.

The first outpost opened in Highland Park in 2017, followed by a location in Addison in 2018. When looking for a third site, Vandelay CEO Hunter Pond was attracted to the neighborhood with its mix of newlyweds, families and older couples. Hudson House offers six types of oysters, which are shipped daily from the East Coast. With seemingly few oyster aficionados in land-locked Dallas, the selections are marked with recommendations for first-timers and oyster snobs alike. The East Coast-inspired restaurant at Abrams Road and Mockingbird Lane features more than 70 pieces of artwork that pay tribute to the landscape and wildlife of the Hudson Valley. The menu is similarly inspired by the culinary history of the region.

For those grieving the loss of IHOP pancakes, fear not. Hudson House’s brunch menu incorporates creations that rival the popular pancake chain. Hudson House’s version includes a red velvet Belgian waffle with honey butter, maple syrup and double-fried chicken. The lemon pancakes will also satisfy any sweet tooth with lemon ricotta, powdered sugar, cream cheese glaze, blueberries and whipped cream. My dining companion and I decided to try all six oyster options at Hudson House and all were delicious, but I must say that the blue points were my absolute favorite. I made sure to note when we were leaving that during happy hour (every day from 3 to 6 pm) all oysters are half-price (normally it’s $3.50 per oyster).

In the case of the blue point the blurb read “first timer’s favorite” and for raspberry simply “oyster snob’s favorite.” Also, the Hudson House team is smart to recommend the perfect drink to accompany each oyster. On my quest to become that ideal of a human, I have found a new favorite brunch spot, Hudson House. It boasts two Dallas area restaurant locations — one in Addison and the other in University Park, with a third is poised to open in early 2020 in Lakewood. Other items we sampled that late afternoon included the American tuna tower salad and Big Brother lobster roll.

Made with two thin patties, American cheese, minced onion, pickles and Hudson sauce, you’ll forget that it’s from a neighborhood seafood joint. I asked our lovely server what one of the most popular menu items was, and she said, “Hands down, our cheeseburger.” What? A burger at a place that totes its incredible delicacies from the sea? Well, given that is was also 1/2 price during happy hour I had to try it — and, honestly, from the first bite, I understood why. Bagels and cream cheese are delivered every weekend from newly opened Shug’s Bagels, located just down the road on Mockingbird Lane. Try six of Shug’s signature creations at Hudson House without waiting in the massive line that forms outside the bagel shop.

This incredible chip and dip pairing was hard to stop chomping on throughout our meal. But room had to be saved, especially because the Hudson cheeseburger, Big Brother Lobster Roll, and French Chicken were coming out next. All were outstanding, but for me, nothing could beat the popular cheeseburger topped with pickles, minced onion, and Hudson sauce. And for dessert, do not miss the Key Lime pie — it’s one of the best things you’ll try. Ownership group Vandelay Hospitality announced that the Lakewood outpost will open its doors at 4040 Abrams Road on July 28.

When they go they like to play a game where they fantasize about traveling to the place where their oyster hails from and what they would do there for a vacation. First off, I knew this was a cool place given that our server Jill had an amazing haircut, platinum and edgy — and also worked on the side as a DJ. Given the current economy, many out there (myself included) are looking for some high-end fun, but at lower prices. Happy hour is often a way to get a classic cocktail and some house specialties at discounted prices.
